Théâtre Périscope

Canada

About

Created in 1985 by four Quebec City theater companies, the Périscope has gone through several phases of development, the most recent of which involved major work to update its facilities and equipment (from 2017 to 2020). The name of the Périscope theater was found in 1989 during a popular contest. Periscope is a word of Greek origin meaning "to look around." Composed of a team of ten people and 3 spaces (including 1 main room and 2 studios), the Périscope Theatre is a venue specialized in creative theater that values audacity, experimentation, freedom and speaking out. It contributes to the development of the public interested in Quebec theater and of the local theatre community active in the creation of original works.

Théâtre Périscope offers presentation and production support services, primarily to theater companies based in the Quebec City area; It works in complementarity with its community and promotes the development of theater in the Quebec City area; It promotes creative theater; It develops a curious, open and loyal theater audience; It is a corporate citizen committed to the transformation of its community. Le Périscope is a landmark, a place of identity and a model for Quebec City artists; it is a warm and lively place, a reference for the general public. It is based on the following values to guide its actions and maintain its relationship with its community:

  • Listening: In a constantly changing and effervescent environment, we must listen and adapt our actions; we must recognize the concerns of our time and place.
  • Openness and respect: Maintain open relationships with all.
  • Proximity and conviviality: To value and multiply direct exchanges with our partners, the public and the members of the team.
  • Rigor and excellence: Act with rigor and constancy in the realization of our mission and in our relations with all; give a fair image of our actions; value excellence in all its forms.
  • Sharing: Being generous with our knowledge and information; encouraging the sharing of our passion for creation.

In 2020, Le Périscope is committed to obtaining the Scène Éco-responsable accreditation (bronze, silver and gold), proposed by the Conseil québécois des événements éco-responsables and supported by Le réseau des femmes en environnement. Théâtre Périscope is embarking on a shift towards social inclusion and gender equality. In this perspective, one of the steps is to become a safe and friendly place for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Periscope wants to be consistent with the vision of innovation it projects and is updating itself to become an inclusive venue in every way. Since April 2020, Periscope Theatre has been using inclusive language in its communications to give visibility to all gender identities.

Théâtre Périscope is supported by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, Canadian Heritage, the City of Québec, the Caisse Desjardins de Québec and Hydro Québec.
